Australia implements Resale Rights
As of 31 March 2024, Dutch authors can benefit from the resale right in Australia! This means that when any of their works are resold in Australia, they will be entitled to a share of the proceeds. This will be possible thanks to new legislation in Australia that allows for cooperation with the Netherlands. For Dutch authors, this means an extra source of income when their artwork is re-sold in Australia beyond the threshold of AUS$1,000 (about €600). All Pictoright (individual or resale right) affiliated authors will also be represented in Australia as from this date.
Artists in Australia
Equally, from this date Australian authors will also be able to benefit from the resale right in the Netherlands. If their works are resold in the Netherlands, they will receive a share of the proceeds. Pictoright collects the resale right for these sales and Copyright Agency in Australia distributes the royalties to the copyright holders.
Art dealers
Art dealers in the Netherlands will be required to pay resale rights for sales ( exceeding the Dutch threshold of €3,000) by Australian authors from 31 March 2024 as well. Whether Pictoright collects for a specific Australian author can be checked (from 31-March 2024) on our member list, https://pictoright.nl/verkopers/ledenlijst-verkopers/.
Global collection
Pictoright is very pleased with these developments and hopes to collect and receive resale rights for more countries outside the EEA in the near future.
